The CC2430DK is a highly integrated system in a single chip solution, specifically designed forRF Evaluation and Development Kits, Boards. It is designed to support the IEEE 802.15.4 and ZigBee specifications, delivering a total end-to-end system solution. It has adjustable RF output power for the transmitter and adjustable sensitivity for the receiver. It also supports a wide range of data rates and modulation types.

The CC2430DK has multiple application fields. It is mainly used in low-rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs), wireless sensor networks, and home automation applications. It is highly suitable for commercial, industrial, and home automation. CC2430DK typically operates in the 2.4GHz ISM (Industrial, Scientific and Medical) frequency band. It contains a RF transceiver operating in the 868MHz, 915MHz, and 2.4GHz bands with maximum output power of plus/minus 4dBm. It is also equipped with 128KB Flash Memory and 8KB SRAM, as well as a 16-bit micro-controller. In addition, the chip offers a range of peripherals to increase application flexibility. These peripherals include a multichannel 10-bit A/D converter, a capture mode timer, and a secure hardware AES encryption/decryption engine.

The working principle of this system is based on the ZigBee protocol, which is an open protocol for low-data-rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs). ZigBee enables low power communication in networks. In such networks, the communication links can be configured in different topologies, such as mesh, star, cluster tree. Under the mesh topology, one node may reach any other node through a series of connection hops. All these messages are transmitted using ZigBee protocol.

The CC2430DK system contains the necessary circuitry to allow the user to send and receive messages. The receiver detects incoming frames, performs energy detection and Radio Frequency (RF) channel selection. It then checks the frame header, computes the frame checksum, and delivers the message to an on-chip RAM buffer. The transmitting part also includes an on-chip hardware-based AES core with selectable 128-bit or 64-bit keys and software for data control. It then performs packet assembly, pulse-shaping of the signal, access-controlled transmission, and packet detection.

The CC2430DK also supports a wide range of data rates and modulation types. Data transmission is supported on both O-QPSK and GFSK modulations. The output power levels are user selectable in the range of plus/minus 4dBm, permitting direct connection to an antenna. Moreover, the receiver sensitivity is adjustable up to -94dBm, allowing experimentation and testing of various antenna configurations.
