Diodes - Bridge Rectifiers
Bridge rectifier circuits are used in a variety of electric applications, including motor controllers and power supplies. Using a bridge, multiple sections of diodes working in conjunction, is to switch the current that runs through the bridge by controlling it’s direction. The structure of the bridge rectifier circuit is dependent on the number of diodes featured in it, and configurations can be constructed with four, six, and eight diodes. These rectifier circuits use two AC inputs and an output, with a center point which is shown in the diagram below.
The CD-HD2004 is a full-wave bridge rectifier, made from high-density pure silicon diodes . Essentially, it is a full-wave single-phase bridge rectifier circuit that is controlled by four diodes arranged in a bridge configuration. This type of structure is most commonly found in applications that use line input voltages up to 400V and output currents up to 4A. Knowing this, this type of bridge rectifier is most frequently employed for flyback type power supplies and DC to DC converters. Some main features of the CD-HD2004 bridge rectifier include low power loss, fast switching speed, low forward voltage drop, and soft-recovery characteristics. The fast switching speeds reduce power loss during the short switching times, while the low forward voltage drop contributes to low power dissipation in the entire circuit. This type of bridge rectifier also has a low reverse leakage current to ensure a stable flow of current over time.
Now, let\'s go into the basics of how the workings of a bridge rectifier. For the most basic construct, a single full-wave bridge rectifier is made of four diodes which are arranged in a bridge configuration with two AC inputs and one output. When the AC input at point A and B is applied, the diodes act to switch the current which flows across the bridge and rectify the AC input into pulsing DC output.
The two pairs of diodes in the circuit alternate in their conduction so half of each cycle only one pair of diodes is conducting. When the right side of the bridge above is conducting, the anode of diode D1 is connected to the positive side of the source and the cathode of diode D2 is connected to the negative side. This means that the current flows from the positive side of the source, down through D1 and up through D2, resulting in the positive side of the load being positive relative to the negative side.
The relationshipbetween the input voltage in a bridge rectifier circuit and the output voltage is determined by the Ida ratio of the diodes. The Ida ratio is the ratio between the output current and the forward voltage drop across the diode. This ratio, along with the input voltage, can be used to calculate the expected output voltage.
In order to get the best out of a bridge rectifier circuit, it is essential that the load is placed at the centre of the bridge circuit. This is due to the fact that when the load is placed at the centre of the circuit, the current flow is reduced which results in a reduction in power loss and an increase in efficiency.
Having said all this, the CD-HD2004 bridge rectifier is designed with a focus on of low power losses, soft-recovery characteristics, and high-density pure silicon diodes which help increase the overall efficiency of the circuit. With the most common application being found in flyback type power supplies and DC to DC converters, the CD-HD2004 bridge rectifier provides a reliable and efficient solution for providing your system with the current it needs.
