The CD74HCT40105M96G4 is a FIFO (First-In First-Out) memory device that belongs to a family of Logic-FIFOs Memory . The working principle of FIFO memory devices is based on a simple but very effective mechanism. The device stores a given number of bytes of data in an internal buffer which is accessed in a first-in first-out (FIFO) manner.The input data is serially loaded at the write address counter while the read address counter can access the data in the same order in which it was written. The CD74HCT40105M96G4 consists of two parts, an FIFO memory core and a bus interface with an inverted strobe to enable the transfer of 1, 4 or 16 bits of data. It has 16 addressable locations and is organized into 2 8-bit memory blocks. When a write operation is performed, data is serially clocked into the device starting at the write address counter. As new data is received, the write address counter is automatically incremented which in turn overwrites the previous data, unless the write address counter reaches the predetermined boundary limit. When the boundary limit is reached, the write address counter will start from the beginning of the memory, effectively returning to the original starting point. During the same process a "full indication bit" is set, indicating that all the memory space has been used up and no more data can be written until more space is made available for writing. To read out the data stored inside the device, the external logic must first set the read address counter followed by issuing a read strobe. Data stored at the address indicated by the read address counter is then read out and the contents of the read address counter is incremented. In other words, data will be read out in the same order in which it was written.The device can be used in various applications including streaming systems, data buffering and memory sub-systems. It is one of the most popular and widely used FIFO memory device in the market today, due to its facility to handle a large amount of data with a relatively low power consumption.
