Through hole resistors can be used in many electronic circuit applications. Generally speaking, these resistors are available in many resistance values ranging from a few ohms to several megohms. Among the various models available, a popular model is the CFR16J18R resistor. Thisthrough hole resistor is constructed from three distinct parts, each with its own function. The three parts of the resistor are the resistor element, the leads, and the terminal.

Theresistor element of the CFR16J18R is aHigh-Efficiency Discrete Resistor element (HEDR). This element is made up of three elements: a ceramic core, a metal substrate and a dielectric coating. The ceramic core is used to provide the resistance value, while the metal substrate and dielectric coating act as the insulation medium. The ceramic core is made ofa porous material, which allows the electrons to flow through it more easily.
