Circuit breakers are a vital component in any electrical setup, charged with protecting wiring and other electrical components from potentially hazardous short circuits and overloads. The CLB-153-11A3N-B-A specializes in residential and light commercial applications, where a large variety of load current and trip characteristics can be vital. Knowing its application field and working principle is key for the proper installation, maintenance and management.
Application Field
The CLB-153-11A3N-B-A is a 15 Amp, two-pole thermal-magnetic molded case circuit breaker that features Self Test, Tamper-Resistant, and Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) protection. This breaker is well suited for use in residential and commercial applications, designed to protect individual branch circuits. This breaker provides protection against both overloads and short circuits, and can easily be installed in the breaker panels of certain models of the Square D™ QO™ line of products. In the application of residences and light commercial work, the CLB-153 offers a large variety of load currents and trip characteristics that are tailored to the particular needs of the facility.
Working Principle
When an excessive amount of current flows through the circuit breaker, the heat generated by the current causes the bi-metal contacts in the breaker to expand and eventually open the circuit. This is the thermal part of the circuit breaker’s working principle. The trip characteristics of the breaker are adjusted via a bimetal disc which is used to adjust the temperature at which the breaker will trip. The speed of the trip is adjustable as well, and can be controlled by the adjustable trip bar. Higher adjustment will lengthen the time it takes for the breaker to trip, whereas a lower adjustment shortens the time of the trip. The magnetic principle of the breaker works in conjunction with the thermal side, using an electromagnet to detect rapid changes in current and quickly open the circuit to protect the wiring against potentially hazardous overloads.
In the event of an overload, the CLB-153-11A3N-B-A circuit breaker instantly cuts the power to the circuit and remains in the tripped position until the cause of the overload is dealt with. Resetting the breaker is a simple process of pressing the reset switch inwards. This breaker is also designed to protect circuits against potentially dangerous arc faults - when a hot wire touches a neutral wire - by quickly shutting off the power and resetting the circuit.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the CLB-153-11A3N-B-A circuit breaker is a two-pole thermal magnetic breaker that provides protection against overloads, short circuits and arc faults. This breaker is ideally suited for use in residential and light commercial applications, and is designed to protect individual branch circuits in the Square D QO breaker panels. Knowing its application field and working principle can help installers, maintenance personnel and facility managers ensure safe, reliable and long lasting performance from their breaker equipment.
