CM250 Application Field and Working Principle

The CM250 fuses are mid-range branch circuit and motor protection devices that provide a safe and reliable way to prevent damage to expensive electrical equipment due to overload and short circuit. They are designed to be installed in panels, junction boxes, and other locations near loads where overcurrent protection is needed.

The CM250 series is designed for protecting branch circuits and motors which require specific small current rating. CM250 fuses are used for protecting circuits of 1/2 horsepower (HP) to 2 HP. A 15 ampere (A) fuse can be used to protect a 1 HP motor, while a 25 A fuse is suggested for protection of a 2 HP motor.

Working Principle

A CM250 fuse is basically an electrical control element which is a metal alloy strip contained in a glass tube. The metallic strip is designed to melt and open when an overcurrent flows through it. This typically happens when there is an overload or short circuit.

When an overcurrent is detected, the metal strip melts and an electrical arc forms between the ends of the strip and causes an increase in the temperature of the fuse. This increase in temperature causes the fuse to open and thus interrupts the flow of current. The fuses are designed to open as soon as the current flow exceeds the current rating of the fuse.

Advantages

CM250 fuses provide short-circuit and overload protection for electrical systems. The use of such fuses can prevent costly and even fatal injuries due to fire and electrocution. Secondly, they are easily installed and replaceable, as compared to circuit breakers.

Finally, these fuses are quite economical. Even if they need to be replaced due to frequent overcurrents, the cost is much less than replacing the equipment that has been damaged due to the same.
