PTC Resettable Fuses, commonly referred to as Polyfuses, are widely used in a wide variety of applications. The CMF-SDP10-2 is one of the most popular models with a voltage rating of 10 volts and a current rating of 2 amps. Specifically designed for circuit protection as an "over-temperature circuit breaker," the CMF-SDP10-2 is a cost-effective alternative to conventional fuses, which are limited in their ability to be reused upon interruption of the electrical current.

Upon overload of the device, the electrons have no place to go and the device begins to absorb more energy in the form of heat. The power that is "consumed" by the PTC Resettable Fuse causes the device to "trip" the circuit and open the current path.

Once the current path has tripped, the resistance of the device increases significantly, preventing further current flow and maintaining the overload condition until the device has had time to cool off. Once the device has cooled down, the resistance of the device decreases and the fuse is able to be reset and the circuit path is reestablished. It is this ability to reset that distinguishes the PTC Resettable Fuse from the conventional fuse.

The CMF-SDP10-2 has the following properties: A highly reliable construction that allows it to reset indefinitely until the fault clears; low internal power dissipation so as not to interfere with system operations; accurate and repeatable trip times for maximum protection and independent device activation; and self resetting capabilities that allow the device to revert back to its original state once the fault has been cleared.

The CMF-SDP10-2 also has a high-low resetting capability making it well-suited for applications that require high circuit protection as it can reset from low temperatures without further testing. This feature ensures that any protective condition that has been exceeded is detected and reset reliably.

To be able to take advantage of the CMF-SDP10-2’s high temperature protection levels, the device must be installed properly. Installing the device too low will result in a slow trip time, whereas installing the device too high will result in a fast trip time. Additionally, the CMF-SDP10-2 has a low voltage drop and good resistance to transients.
