Common mode chokes are one type of electromagnetic shielding that is made up of several separate coils and magnets. The coils and magnets are arranged in a configuration that provides the most efficient levels of magnetic encasement around a particular medium. The working principle of the CMT-8118 is based on the use of several ferrite cores or split bobbin cores wrapped with copper wire. When the wire is energized by a current, it produces an inductance that functions as a filter, blocking high frequency AC signals from exiting the source. The ferrite cores serve as an additional form of electromagnetic shielding that helps to block or attenuate noise while allowing the desired frequency, or signal, to pass through.
The CMT-8118 also utilizes current balancing techniques so that the noise noise on both the positive and negative sides of the wire is attenuated simultaneously. This provides uniform noise suppression resulting in more efficient electrical noise shielding. Additionally, capacitors are often placed across the windings to increase the effectiveness of the device. The capacitors also help to limit any AC signals from entering the device, as well as damping the inductor’s natural resonance.
The CMT-8118 also includes built-in temperature compensation/stability features which help to ensure consistent performance over a wide range of operating conditions, including temperature. Over temperature protection is also included to prevent the choke from becoming overloaded or damaged due to high temperatures. Overall, the CMT-8118 is an efficient and reliable common mode choke designed for noise reduction in power line and cable communication applications.
