The CP8138AT is a singularly efficient, flexible, and powerful all-in-one touch controller that achieves superior performance in any application demanding economic and reliable operation. It supports a wide range of resistive touch technologies, providing superior signal-processing functions while occupying minimal CPU cycles, allowing easier integration of the CP8138AT into a wide range of applications.
The CP8138AT is specifically designed to meet the requirements of Wide Area Network (WAN) Application and can accommodate multiple Touch Mechanical Structures. It has the capability to detect up to three touches and supports many features, such as linearity calibration, drift compensation, noise rejection, finger detection, and anti-ghosting. It is also equipped with a comprehensive set of I/O pins, which enable system connection with a variety of devices via the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI).
The CP8138AT is a controller that utilizes a parallel 16-bit Digital Signal Processor (DSP) coupled with a 14-bit Microcontroller Unit (MCU). It is embedded with a proprietary touch sensing engine that greatly reduces programming difficulty for users, thereby greatly improving system development times. It consists of three key components – the Analog Front End (AFE) that converts the analog touch signal into digital format; the Digital Signal Processor (DSP) that processes the information obtained from the AFE; and the Microcontroller Unit (MCU) that performs the coordination of the data between user application and the touch controller.
The AFE component of the CP8138AT converts the analog signals into digital signals for the DSP processing core. It consists of a high-density cross-coupled capacitive sensing technique, together with the Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) and Programmable Gain Amplifier (PGA). The analog signals from the touch sensor are fed onto the AFE and then pre-processed by the PGA, allowing the signals to be amplified as required. This also minimizes the effect of surrounding interference. Lastly, the ADC is used to convert the analog signals into digital format, allowing the sensor data to be transmitted to the DSP.
The DSP of the CP8138AT executes proprietary firmware to process the data obtained from AFE. It processes the sensor data and implements the drift compensation, linearity corrections, finger detections, and noise filtering algorithms. It detects and corrects the negative voltage delta detected around the contact point during a transient condition. It also executes functions such as gain balancing, coordinate recalibration, linearity corrections, and data correction to ensure a more accurate response from the touch controller.
The MCU portion of the CP8138AT is responsible for the communication between the user application and the touch controller. It is an 8-, 16-, or 32-bit microcontroller that manages local data and provides a bridge from the DSP to the system bus. The microcontroller provides several commands to obtain data from the DSP, configure the DSP status flags, read/write any registers, and setup update callback functions. These commands allow for the easy integration of CP8138AT touch controllers into an entire system, helping to simplify application development.
