Optical Sensors which utilize photoelectric, industrial, and similar principles are used in a wide variety of applications. The CX-411-P-C5 is a type of industrial optical sensor, widely used in railway level crossing systems. It is designed for use in high speed, emergency braking systems, and can detect passing trains at speeds of more than 350 km/h. It has three operating modes; Automatic, Manual, and Standby, so that users can adjust the operation to suit their particular application.

The CX-411-P-C5 consists of a laser transmitter and two detectors, which are both sensitized at one wavelength. The laser transmitter emits a continuous wave of infrared light which reflects off of any object within its range. When a train passes by, the beam is interrupted and the detectors register this interruption. When the interruption is detected, the output of the transmitter and receivers is monitored and triggers an impulse to the braking system.

In order to detect high speed moving objects, the laser beam and sensors have been specially designed to limit any false positives and false negatives. This is achieved by dealing with two different parameters. The first parameter is the Field Of View (FOV) which is the angle at which the beam is emitted from the transmitter. By widening the FOV, more of the railway track can be observed, so that the sensing range is increased. The other parameter is the Sensitivity Threshold which is a value set to differentiate between objects with a smaller or larger reflectivity. By setting a higher threshold, larger objects can be detected while obstructions such as small birds can be ignored.

The second operating mode is Manual mode. In manual mode, the control panel is used to select the operating parameters, which are then transmitted to the transmitter and detectors through an optical signal. This manual mode is useful for scenarios such as testing or setting up the system without interference from external sources. The third operating mode is Standby mode. In standby mode, the system is effectively turned off and the transmitter and detectors are not active. This mode is used for increasing the system’s lifespan and preventing accidental activation.

The CX-411-P-C5 is an effective, reliable, and accurate industrial optical sensor which is ideally suited for use in railway automation and braking systems. Its wide FOV, sensitivity threshold, and 3 operating modes offer users the capability of detecting passing trains quickly and accurately. Its ability to detect objects as small as birds, its remote control options, and its low power consumption make it the ideal choice for the safety-critical nature of railway applications.
