The CY8C20160-SX2I is a low power, mixed signal, capacitive sensing MCU used to provide sensing and control functions that are designed to replace traditional electromechanical switches. It is a member or the PSoC® family of programmable System-on-Chip solutions from Cypress Semiconductor and provides highly integrated protection, detection and measurement capabilities in a single device for capacitive touch sensing applications.
The CY8C20160-SX2I device is suitable for a wide range of application field such as industrial, medical, automotive, consumer market and many others. It is designed for use in applications such as user interfaces, touch switches, proximity sensing, and human machine interface solutions. This device also can be used for design of low power periphery controllers and low power touchpads and buttons.
The CY8C20160-SX2I device is equipped with a dual channel capacitive sensing controller (CSC). Each of the channel provides configurable sensing levels inputs and digital outputs. The CSC also has block-level interrupt support. This allows the device to wake up from a low sleep power state upon detection of a touch condition such as a button press, as well as provide interrupt driven applications when the device is awake.
The CY8C20160-SX2I device is also equipped with an ultra-low power ultra-low power peripheral control logic (PCLK) that can be used for design of low power peripheral controllers such as indicator LEDs and buzzers. This peripherals can be individually enabled and configured to operate autonomously from the sensing channels.
The working principle of the CY8C20160-SX2I device is based on the principle of capacitive sensing. When a finger, hand or some other conductive material is brought close to a capacitive touch pad, the capacitance of the pad and the capacitance of the touch will change. This change in capacitance can then be used to detect the presence or absence of a touch. This capacitance change is detected by either a self or mutual capacitance sensing transmit waveform and receiver waveforms.
The CY8C20160-SX2I device utilizes both self and mutual capacitance sensing algorithms to ensure reliable detection of touch. The self capacitance allows the device to determine if a single finger or two or more fingers are touching the pad, providing a more accurate signal for multitouch functions. The mutual capacitance allows for detecting small changes in capacitance when two or more electrodes connected to the sensing channels, providing more accurate and reliable signal for single-finger touch gestures.
The CY8C20160-SX2I device also features a wide variety of features to maximize performance and reduce power consumption. These features include auto-calibration, hysteresis, noise rejection and adjustable sensitivity. The device is also capable of supporting up to 32 sensing inputs, allowing designers to create more complex applications such as gestures and proximity sensing.
