DC1087A is an evaluation board (EVB) designed to develop off-line AC/DC and DC/DC switch mode power supply (SMPS) products. As an EVB it has two main uses, one as a design platform, to facilitate development of SMPS products, and the other to enable a comparison or evaluation of components and power devices from different vendors.
The DC1087A EVB has two channels containing isolated half-bridge DC/DC converters. Each channel is capable of providing up to 65W of power and is suitable for applications with an input voltage up to 72 Vdc. Both channels are fully protected against current and voltage overshoots and include adjustable output voltage, current feedback for stable output and adjustable over-power protection for good reliability.
In its primary role as a design platform, the DC1087A provides a comprehensive development environment for any SMPS topology focused on either AC/DC or DC/DC applications. Various discrete power components, such as ICs, transformers, inductors and capacitors, can be used to test and develop a prototype for a power supply.
The SMPS topology used in the DC1087A allows the use of external components in order to enhance the transient response. Moreover, the DC1087A can facilitate fine tuning of the main parameters to optimize the response depending on the requirements of the application. It also supports the use of high frequency control loops and discrete components such as temperature and current sensors. A range of standard user control and monitoring sensors are included to enable full system control to be achieved.
The power converter in the DC1087A is based on the LLC topology, which combines the advantages of the buck, boost, and buck-boost topologies, as well as the advantage offered by coupled inductors. This hybrid topology provides improved transient response, better efficiency and improves the cross-regulation of the output voltages.
The DC1087A is configureable through the use of software and hardware control settings. It is possible to adjust all key parameters in any application such as output voltage, output current, switching frequency, turn-on and turn-off delays, temperature monitoring, and partial-load efficiency.
In its secondary role as an evaluation board, the DC1087A can be used to compare or evaluate different components and power devices from different vendors. The DC1087A provides a platform to test various discrete components (such as MOSFETs, diodes, capacitors and inductors) and integrated circuits from different suppliers. This allows the selection of the best power device for a given application.
The DC1087A is designed for applications with low voltage such as the 12Vdc to 48Vdc range, allowing power management solutions for all kinds of industrial applications. It is also suitable for applications requiring low standby power consumption, allowing the development of products compliant with the latest regulations. With its comprehensive design platform and the ability to evaluate different components, the DC1087A is a valuable tool for design engineers working on AC/DC and DC/DC SMPS projects.
