?IntroductionThe DFR0140 is a Linear Voltage Regulator family offered as evaluation boards by Diodes Incorporated for providing users with a simple and yet effective solution for regulating input voltage. It features an adjustable input voltage range of 0.8V to 5.5V and a controlled output voltage, for a maximum current of about 1.0A as well as advanced features such as over temperature protection, over current protection, and low noise and excellent stability under high line and load transients. The board supports a wide range input stability of 0.6% to 4.5%, which make it suitable for various applications and devices.Application FieldDFR0140 can be used for a variety of applications such as providing regulated voltages for various consumer electronic products, power management applications, battery operated systems, temperature sensors, and other applications requiring a fixed and stable power supply. The board can be used with a variety of supply sources such as power supplies, batteries, or AC adapters.Working PrincipleDFR0140 is based on linear voltage regulation technology, which utilizes a voltage-controlled variable resistor (division element) to form a feedback loop for output voltage control. The feedback loop compares the output voltage to a reference voltage. A difference between the actual output voltage and reference voltage results in an error voltage (Vfb) that controls the regulated output voltage.The linear regulator consists of two main components: the P-channel and N-channel MOSFETs. The P-channel MOSFET is used for sourcing the output current and the N-channel MOSFET is used for sinking the output current. The gain of the circuit is proportional to the ratio between the N-channel and P-channel MOSFETs.The first stage of the circuit is the voltage control circuit, which includes an error amplifier that amplifies the difference between the output voltage and reference voltage. The amplified signal is then passed to the duty cycle logic circuit, which includes two comparators that compare the amplified signal with the bias voltage and gate drive voltage. The output of the comparators control the gate drive signal to the MOSFETs, thus controlling the duty cycle of the voltage regulator.
