The DP11V3015B25K uses a unique absolute optical scanning method, for both single turn and multi-turn position measurement. It consists of a fixed code disk, an optoelectronic detector, and a processing unit. The code disk is a bar code pattern with an outside diameter of 128 mm; it is made up of four segments – a reference index, four alternate bright/dark features or markers, and a fundamental repetition. This code disk is fixed to a rotating shaft and rotates. The emitted light of the optoelectronic detector passes through the code disk, and each of its 4 sides generates a different signal pattern.

Using this pattern matching technique, the changing state of the code disk is determined and absolute position information is obtained. For angular position measurement, the reference index will provide an initial position when the rotation begins. As the shaft turns, the absolute angular position of the code disk relative to the reference index is calculated, and this absolute angular position is read directly from the processed output of the encoder.
