The DS1090U-8/V+ is part of Texas Instruments’ (TI’s) family of precision clock and timing products. The DS1090U-8/V+ offers a high performance, low-jitter digital system clock. Using this device’s integrated clock generation capability, designers can generate up to 24 output clocks with frequencies up to 125 MHz. These user-programmable outputs can provide “skew” free clock output synchronicity, eliminating the need for “daisy chain” clock distribution.
The DS1090U-8/V+ is an ideal choice for applications such as telecom, networking, storage, chip and board testing, industrial, automotive and other embedded system applications. It is an inexpensive device, requiring very little power, and its operation takes place within a 0 to 70°C temperature range. It can generate virtually any frequency in the range from 8.75 to 125MHz. This frequency generation capability is accompanied by remarkably low jitter and excellent phase noise characteristics.
On the application side, the DS1090U-8/V+ is suited for a wide array of applications which require high frequency clock generation, such as test equipment, digital signal processors, memory controllers, digital audio and video systems, data communications, and automotive electronics. The DS1090U-8/V+ utilizes TI\'s proprietary frequency multiplication and voltage-controlled oscillator circuitry to precisely lock onto the crystal oscillator frequency. This process is facilitated by a phase-locked-loop (PLL) based VCO control circuit. This control circuit constantly monitors both the external reference clock signal and VCO frequency for discrepancies and adjusts the VCO frequency to keep output frequencies constant.
The internal PLL loop is in charge of regulating the frequency of the VCO, along with the input crystal oscillator signal. This internal PLL allows operation in both closed and open loop modes. In the closed loop configuration, it enables the VCO to lock with low jitter and low noise to the external reference frequency even with very small frequency offsets. In open loop mode, the PLL provides an adjustable gain, allowing the oscillator to oscillate at frequencies wider than those specified by the crystal. Therefore, the device can be programmed with different output frequencies within a wide range.
The device has been designed to also secure output signals that are closely monitored by regulation. This is made possible by the use of Frequency Locking, which is a feature of the DS1090U-8/V+ that allows for silicon-level frequency adjustment via a programmable “Byte”. Frequency locking ensures that the output signals always remain within regulation parameters and never drift outside of their specified limits. This guarantees clock signal uniformity from device to device, even when operating under varying ambient temperatures or when driven by different source frequencies.
