DS1090U-8+ is a phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizer that provides phase-locked output frequencies from a low-frequency reference. Its primary application field is in the generation of high-frequency clock signals from relatively low-frequency inputs. Its flexible architecture allows the output frequency to be modified quickly, easily and accurately.

The DS1090U-8+ is a 3rd-order PLL structure that provides a frequency synthesized output. The PLL works by combining a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), phase detector and loop filter together. The phase detector compares the output frequency of the VCO to an external reference clock and then adjusts the VCO output frequency as needed in order to achieve the desired frequency.

The DS1090U-8+ uses a digital phase-locked loop (DPLL) architecture to provide a wide range of output frequencies from a low-frequency reference.
