The DS2176Q+ is a configurable 2-port modem controller device that transmits and receives data over simplex, dual-tone multifrequency (DTMF) telephone lines. It is a single-chip solution that provides comprehensive telecom control features, including support for call modes such as answer, originate, answer-and-originate and on-hook, with each port independently configurable. With the addition of a microcontroller, the DS2176Q+ can be used to create a complete telephone answering machine or modem-over-telephone-line system.

The DS2176Q+ is designed for easy integration with an external microcontroller. It provides an 16-bit register interface for data communication, as well as versatile control functions that allow directly connecting telephone lines, creating a simple telephone interface. The device can autonomously detect DTMF tones, answer incoming calls, and initiate calls. It is also designed for low power consumption and has a low current standby mode for extended battery life.

Working Principle

The DS2176Q+ is an asynchronous modem controller device with flexible operation modes, providing the ability to configure modem settings such as data rate, line protocol and compression settings. The device’s dual-port capability allows it to simultaneously handle multiple modem connections. It also provides an array of control functions including incoming call detection, DTMF detection, line testing, and response tone generation for answering and originating calls.

When a call is received, the device will detect the Caller Identification (CLID) information from the incoming call and store it in internal registers. It can then use the CLID information to determine how to respond to the call, such as to transfer, terminate, or connect it. The device can also be programmed to automatically answer incoming calls, detect DTMF tones, and generate response tones for either outgoing or incoming calls.

For data transmission, the DS2176Q+ supports full-duplex operations in multiple synchronous and asynchronous settings. It can accommodate multiple baud rates up to 115.2 kbps and supports various line protocols, including V.92/V.90/V.34+/V.34bis, V.17/V.29/V.27ter, and K56flex/X2. The device also contains data compression algorithms, such as V.42bis, V.44, V.42, and MNP5.
