DS2417P+ Application Field and Working Principle

The DS2417P+ is a real-time clock (RTC) with built-in battery backup for superior accuracy, time-stamping and extended timekeeping. Its built-in high-accuracy crystal oscillator allows for extended timekeeping in battery-backed applications without frequency drift, and its compact form factor enables customers to use the device in space-constrained or complex applications. This Real-Time Clock device is suitable for a variety of applications requiring accurate timekeeping even in the absence of a system clock source. One example of an application utilizing the DS2417P+ is a Time-Division Multiplex (TDM) system where a separate RTC is needed to keep accurate time while other hardware is powered down.

The DS2417P+ utilizes a conventional crystal oscillator circuit to generate accurate clock pulses. The crystal oscillator is comprised of two active components, a capacitor and a crystal, which are connected to contacts on the device. When the crystal is vibrating at its correct frequency, it generates a pulse that is picked up by the two contacts. The two contacts are connected to the oscillator circuit, which is responsible for the clock pulse timing. From the oscillator circuit, the clock signals are sent to the RTC where they are used to update the time and calculate the time-stamping information.

The DS2417P+ also has a built-in temperature sensor that can be used to track temperature changes and further accuracy.
