The DS3234S#T&R real-time clock is a low-power calendar clock with a specialized integrated circuit (IC) design of highly accurate square-wave generator that is used to keep track of time in many applications. It can accurately measure the time and date in milliseconds and stores this information in a memory device. It is based on an oscillating crystal which provides low power consumption, accurate ticking and low reset times.

Real-time clocks, also known as timekeeping devices, help compute the accurate time of day. As the name implies, real-time clocks are capable of recognizing the exact time of day, usually to within a fraction of a second. This device does not rely on other systems such as the Central Processing Unit (CPU) for time keeping. Instead, it uses a specialized IC chip to mark the time.

The DS3234S#T&R chip is capable of synchronizing with the leap second. It contains a non-volatile RAM (Random Access Memory) that stores the current time and date in a battery-backed memory, as well as a power supply that is capable of providing a respectable level of backup power to the device.

The clock can be programmed to operate in either a stand-alone or multi-node mode to coincide with the specific requirements of the user. The DS3234S#T&Rcan also be used to provide timing information to a variety of other devices, such as routers, switches, and communications equipment. The clock can be programmed to provide synchronization with the Data, Address, and Control (DAC) signals, permitting the user to set the clock to match the DAC signal so that all the connected devices are synchronized.
