The MEMS resonator is typically sealed in an IC (Integrated Circuit) package and has two electrodes for electrical connection. An electrical current is applied to the electrodes which causes a mechanical movement in the crystal by the piezoelectric effect. The current causes the crystal to vibrate at its resonant frequency and consequently generates an alternating electrical signal on the electrodes.
