Pin Configurable/Selectable Oscillators are specialized types of oscillator circuits designed to be configured during or after assembly with different accessible control pins, allowing engineers to accommodate unique frequency requirements without the need to physically adjust components within the oscillator, or replace the oscillator entirely. The DSC400-1311Q0076KE2 is a widely used pin configurable/selectable oscillator that is highly versatile and suitable for many applications.

To achieve the necessary performance levels, the DSC400-1311Q0076KE2 oscillator is built with a number of essential circuit elements that play a role in the working principle of the oscillator. The construction of the oscillator consists of a quartz crystal, depending on the customer’s requested frequency the quartz crystal is placed inside a metal enclosure, together they form the quartz clock. As the quartz crystal is an important factor to accurate and stable operation, it is matched to its enclosure on the tightest possible dimensions to make sure its desired performance is achieved. On top of that, the oscillator is enclosed in an epoxy resin case with an integral metal lid, which allows the metal casing to form an excellent radio frequency shielding.

Secondly, the quartz clock is connected through two metal electrodes to a built-in resonator, the resonator allows the metal electrodes to be soldered directly to the oscillator printed circuit board. The inbuilt quartz oscillating circuit seeks to achieve the customer requested frequency and tuning capacitors which have been pre-set to a certain value, that value being dependent upon the frequency required that controls the oscillator to determine the customer requested frequency. The supplied capacitor equates to the oscillation frequency according to the type of oscillators and the customers requested frequency.

The oscillator also contains a voltage input circuit, the supply voltage to activate the oscillator is applied through this voltage input circuit. Unlike the quartz clock, the voltage input circuit does not include an open circuit element such as a quartz crystal and instead contains a voltage control circuit element e.g. semiconductor that performs the oscillation and supplies only a limited current level.

Finally, the performance of the device is enhanced with a noise suppression circuit that stands between the quartz clock and the voltage input circuit of the oscillator. The construction of the device requires two capacitors (C1 and C2) connected together in series to the incoming line. The capacitor C1 (Electrolytic) has a low series resistance and C2 (Ceramic) has a high series resistance. The crystall sealing construction enables the oscillator to be used in a wide range of applications, such as mobile and consumer electronics, making it a popular option for these areas.
