An optical sensor is an electronic device capable of detecting and reacting to varying levels of light. The E3T-FT12, produced by Omron, is a diffuse-reflective & long-distance type photoelectric sensor with a wide range of applications across industrial sensors. In this article, we will seek to explore the E3T-FT12\'s application field and working principle.
Application Field
The E3T-FT12 is designed to detect on transparent and reflective surfaces, and its short ranging distance and wide detection area makes it ideal for use in applications with a wide variety of detection surfaces, including opaque, gloss, and dark objects. Originally designed with food-grade industry applications in mind, the E3T-FT12 is now used in factories, automation plants, and even in home robotics projects.
The wide breadth of application made possible by the E3T-FT12 owes much to the wide range of features offered for its size. Its long-distance detection range of up to 60cm, adjustable diverging angle that can be set from ¬Φ110° up to Φ170°, and LED cup – all make it possible for the E3T-FT12 to perform extensive applications. Specifically, its long detection distance makes it possible to detect objects of various sizes, shapes, materials, and weights.
Working Principle and Identification Methods
The working principle of the E3T-FT12 is based on the reflection of light. The optical sensor is equipped with an infrared light emitting diode and a receiving diode, which facilitate photoelectric sensing. Objects that enter an E3T-FT12\'s detection area will reflect its infrared light, which is then detected and identified by the receiving diode. The presence of an object is then indicated from the output signal of the receiver.
The E3T-FT12 can be used with various identification methods – including direct reflective sensing, sensing through background, and object distance detection – all enabled by the adjustable reflection cup and ambient light in the detection area. In direct reflective sensing, reflections of the infrared light are returned directly to the sensor, providing a simple detection of objects. Alternatively, in sensing through background, the infrared light emit diode can be used to detect objects that fall within the detection area. As for object distance detection, the E3T-FT12 can be used to detect objects even when they\'re further away from the sensor.
Conclusion
The E3T-FT12 is a diffuse-reflective & long-distance type photoelectric sensor. It has been designed for use in many industrial and home robotics applications, with the wide applicability made possible by its adjustable diverging angle, long-distance detection range, and LED cup. The sensor works based on the principle of reflection, with different identification methods – such as sensing through a background – enabled by the adjustable reflection cup and ambient light. All these capabilities have made the E3T-FT12 one of the most adaptable sensors on the market.
