Film capacitors are generally made of a film dielectric and a metal electrode. The ECH-U1C223GX5 is a miniature (which allows for increased capacitance in a compact size) axial-leaded, high performance AC film capacitor series, which is ideal for specific uses in AC applications. Its general applications are high voltage ceramic capacitors, electronic ballasts, air conditioners and medical equipment. Its wide range of reliability and low ESRs make it highly suitable for critical high frequency AC applications.
Working Principle
The ECH-U1C223GX5 is an AC film capacitor with a monolithic dielectric film of polypropylene. It works on an AC voltage across the dielectric with no polarity restrictions. The dielectric film stores electrical energy, much like a battery, such that at any instant, the charge stored within the dielectric is proportional to the electric field that exists between the capacitor plates. The dielectric film also acts as an isolation barrier to limit the capacitance’s current to a safe level.
When a voltage is applied to the capacitor, an electric field is established across the capacitor’s dielectric as well as an electric energy stored in its plates. This electric energy stored in the capacitor is released as a voltage drop on the already applied voltage. This voltage drop manifests as a current when the applied current falls below its maximum allowable magnitude, that is known as leakage current.
Application Field
The ECH-U1C223GX5 is well suited for use in AC applications such as electronic ballasts, air conditioners, medical equipment, and high voltage ceramic capacitors for power solutions.
