AC/DC converters are one of the most ubiquitous components in the world of electronic engineering. ECM100US24 is a high efficiency wide input voltage AC/DC converter with power factor correction (PFC). It offers a high efficiency up to 88% and its ultra wide input voltage range from 85Vac to 265Vac. With patented peak current control technology, ECM100US24 provides maximum power of 100W and maximum output current of 4A.

ECM100US24 is especially suitable for driving LED lighting, audio power amplifiers, electric tools, smart electronic appliances, and medical device power supplies. Its parameter setting is accomplished with the PFC control IC inside the converter module while the other parameters are handled by external components.

The basic block diagram of ECM100US24 is shown in Figure 1. It consists of an active power factor correction (PFC) circuit using a boost topology, a pulse-width modulation (PWM) DC-DC converter, a voltage detection and monitoring section, various protection circuits and an output filter. The main components of the converter are the PFC controller U1, switching transistors Q1 and Q2, output rectifier D1, output filter inductor L1, and capacitors C1, C2 and C3.

The working principle of ECM100US24 is depicted in the following explanation. Firstly, the input voltage from AC power source is rectified and filtered before being applied to the input terminals of the PFC circuit. The PFC circuit consists of an energy storage capacitor C1, boost inductor L1, and power control switch Q1. The PFC controller U1 drives Q1 to maintain the power factor in the input stage near unity. During each switching cycle, Q1 charges the energy storage capacitor C1 until the peak input current is reached. At this point, Q1 is turned off and inductor L1 discharges the energy stored in C1 to the drain of Q2.

The PFC output is then rectified in the synchronous rectifier D1 to produce the DC voltage. The output voltage and current are then filtered by the output filter consisting of inductor L1 and capacitor C2. The output is then regulated to its desired value by the PWM DC-DC converter. The PWM DC-DC converter consists of a voltage control loop, a current control loop, and a spurious noise reduction circuit. The voltage control loop controls the output voltage by adjusting the pulse width ratio of the switching transistors Q2 and the current control loop monitors the output current by measuring the voltage drop across the current sensing resistor R1.

The voltage detection circuit monitors the output voltage to detect over-voltage and under-voltage conditions. The protection circuits of ECM100US24 include short circuit protection, over-current protection, over-temperature protection, and over-voltage protection. The converter can be enabled or disabled with the power good input signal. The converter is enabled when PG signal is at a logic low level and disabled when the signal is at the logic high level.
