Film capacitors, also known as plastic film capacitors, are similar to other capacitors in that they use two conductive plates to store energy in the form of an electric field. What makes film capacitors distinct, however, is their insulating material—a thin film of polyester, polycarbonate, or tetoron. These films are chosen for their excellent dielectric strength, which allows them to hold more charge despite their size, and resist higher-voltage applications.
One of the most popular types of film capacitors is the ECQ-E2103KBB, which are often used for motor drive circuits, power supplies, general-purpose coupling and decoupling, as well as audio crossover and filter circuits. The ECQ-E2103KBB is a metalized polyester film capacitor, meaning that the electrodes are metalized with a thin metal layer on the polyester base film. This electrode metalization is critical to a capacitor’s performance, as it reduces the risk of arc-over and flashover, increases the capacitance and voltage ratings when compared to an equivalent non-metalized capacitor, and increases the capacitor’s performance in high-frequency applications. The ECQ-E2103KBB is designed for low EMI (electromagnetic interference) and low losses, making it a great choice for high-frequency applications.
So how exactly do film capacitors work? The first step is to understand the basics of how a capacitor works. A capacitor is made up of two conductive plates separated by an insulator like the ones found in film capacitors. When a voltage is applied across the two conductive plates, the insulator (dielectric) will store electrical energy in the form of an electric field created by the separation of charges—positive charge on one plate and negative charge on the other. This electric field allows the storing of electrical energy until the voltage is removed and the electric field collapses.
In the case of the ECQ-E2103KBB, the metal layer conducting the positive and negative charges helps to reduce the ESR (equivalent series resistance of the capacitor and reduce the ‘self-heating’ effect seen in some low frequency applications. The capacitor also has a higher temperature coefficient than other types of film capacitors, representing its ability to tolerate inrush currents and have a longer half-life.
The ECQ-E2103KBB therefore connects the two conductive plates to allow the electric field to form between them, storing the electrical energy at the same time. Hence why these capacitors are particularly suited for high-frequency applications, such as power supplies and audio crossover and filter circuits. Additionally, they are relatively small in size, making them appropriate for many space-restricted applications. This makes the ECQ-E2103KBB one of the most popular film capacitors used today.
