Crystals come in all shapes, sizes, and types, providing a range of solutions for many electronic applications. One such crystal is the ECS-98.3-20-20A-TR. This device is used in many electronic systems, and understanding its application field and working principle is key to its successful integration for any given application.
The ECS-98.3-20-20A-TR is best suited for applications in which a very accurate timebase oscillation source is required. Said applications may include frequency synthesizers, broadband modems, communications systems, high-speed clocks, surveillance systems, and other applications in which timing and frequency accuracy are essential. The device consists of a miniaturized piezoelectric quartz crystal resonator combined with a tuning-fork drive that oscillates at its resonant frequency. The quartz oscillator offers a highly accurate and reliable measure of frequency, with a typical frequency stability of +/-25ppm (parts per million).
The operating principle behind this reliable crystal is based on its mechanical design. Within the crystal, a quartz resonator is cut in the shape of a vibrating tuning fork. The two arms of the fork, which are termed ‘prongs’, are symmetrically cut from a single piece of quartz. In addition, a conductive metallic layer is sputtered onto the crystal surface, allowing electrical energy to be converted into mechanical energy, and vice versa. The oscillation of the crystal is subsequently kept in small-signal oscillation, by an external feedback loop. This loop amplifies the oscillation response of the crystal, constant adjusting the signal frequency until it is equal to the designed resonance frequency.
Once the signal frequency is equal to the resonance frequency, a stable signal is maintained, allowing the signal frequency to remain in oscillation within the specified frequency stability tolerance. Once signal oscillation is initiated and stabilized, the ECS-98.3-20-20A-TR becomes an active frequency source for the external system. This signal can then be used to form the base frequency for an application, such as a clock input for a modem, or a frequency synthesis reference.
The ability of the ECS-98.3-20-20A-TR to provide accurate and reliable frequency stability enables it to find its application in many of today’s electronics systems. This device serves as the core temperature-stable oscillator for many of these systems, as it is capable of providing excellent tolerance to variations in temperature and humidity. These attributes, combined with its miniature size and durability, make the ECS-98.3-20-20A-TR a powerful and reliable frequency source, suitable for many applications.
