What are Film Capacitors?

Film capacitors are a type of electronic component used for filtering, decoupling and memory storage applications. Unlike electrolytic capacitors in which electrical charges are stored in a layer of electrolytic fluid between two metal plates, film capacitors build up charge on a thin insulating film. This type of capacitor is also referred to as a “polyester or Mylar film capacitor” or “film dielectric capacitor.”The two main types of Film Capacitors are Metallized Film Capacitors and Non-Metallized Film Capacitors. Metallized Film Capacitors have a thin metal layer added to each side of the dielectric film which increases their capacitance. Non-Metallized Film Capacitors use a thin layer of plastic film as the dielectric instead.

ECW-H20392HV Application Field and Working Principle

ECW-H20392HV is a Metallized Polyester Film Capacitor produced by Neosid. Polyester film capacitors are polarized and consist of two printed aluminum layers which are connected successively with a thin plastic film for insulation between the layers.The ECW-H20392HV is primarily used in DC, AC and RFI applications. The maximum operating temperature of the ECW-H20392HV is 105°C and it has a rated voltage of 250VAC. The capacitance of the ECW-H20392HV is 6.8µF and the tolerance is ±10%. The ESR at 100kHz is 35mOhm.The film dielectric and the metallized electrodes of the ECW-H20392HV are selected for good performance and reliability. The capacitance of the capacitor depends on the dielectric constant of the film, the thickness of the dielectric and the area of the electrodes. The ECW-H20392HV also employs a self-healing mechanism which prevents the capacitor from shorting out due to high operating temperatures or overvoltages.The working principle of a metallized polyester capacitor is that the electric field between the thin metal layers and the dielectric film induces a charge on the surface of the dielectric. When a voltage is applied across the capacitor, a charge builds up across the surfaces of the dielectric, causing a capacitive current to flow through the capacitor. When the capacitor is disconnected from the voltage source, the charge stored within the capacitor leaks away very slowly, leading to a decrease in capacitance.The ECW-H20392HV is designed with a high temperature-resistant metallized polyester film with high stability and insulation properties. It can be used in a wide range of applications, such as filtering, decoupling, and memory storage. Its superior performance makes it an optimal choice for AC, DC, and RFI applications.
