Optical Sensors – Photointerrupters – Slot Type – Transistor Output
The EE-SH3-D is an optical sensor generally used for measuring the presence of an object in an industrial setting. Its usual application is detecting the arrival of a passing object and triggering an associated control or alarm. It is a slot type, transistor output type photointerrupter, utilizing a linear wheel, slotted disc, or an encoder to interrupt the path of the inner phototransistor. As one of the most widely used photointerrupters, it has excellent characteristics including high reliability, operational speed, and low terminal voltage.
The EE-SH3-D works by utilizing the optical technology – emitting a light beam from an infrared LED. The beam passes through a tunnel formed by the two sets of a slot in the disc connected to the phototransistor. Rotating the disc interrupts the path repeatedly leading to an on/off switch of the phototransistor’s output. The same mechanism is used in both transmissive and reflective applications. In the transmissive application, an external light sources counteracts the LED light enabling accurate detection within the given range.
In terms of its electrical characteristics, it features low collector-emitter saturation voltage and high output power, making it suitable for long distance remote control applications. Also, the EE-SH3-D has high release gain – a minimum value of 100 – which ensures precise operation when detecting a passing object. Additionally, the device offers alarm output capability and current flowing functions. In alarm output mode, two light beams are emitted in opposite directions and the collector output switches to a low impedance state when both beams are blocked at the same time.
