Optical sensors use light to detect and measure properties of physical objects and environment. Photointerrupters, also known as slot type, are one of the most common type of sensors used in industry. In particular, the EE-SX1140 slot type photointerrupter with an integrated transistor output module which allows for precise control, is often used for applications ranging from industrial robotics to contact switches in notebook computers.

The EE-SX1140 slot type photo interrupter consists of an infrared light source, an optical indicating device, and an integrated transistor output module. The infrared light source emits light which is then intercepted by the second device. As the two devices come into physical contact, a voltage spike is generated.
