EE-SX1340 is an optical sensor, specifically a Photointerrupter, of the slot type, with a transistor output. It is a single-piece package component, designed to detect the passage of objects that interrupt a beam of light.

Most common applications of EE-SX1340 as a Photointerrupter are for the detection of paper movement in a printing industry, sensing conveyor belt systems, object counting, and end-of-travel detection, or for straight-through processing systems. EE-SX1340 is a part of the broad range of interrupter devices from Omron, that is designed to resist disruption from ambient light and electrical interference, as well as to stay dependable, even during long-term operation.

Design

EE-SX1340 utilizes visible light to detect objects or materials that pass through the slot. The sensor is designed with an emission and a reception element set at a certain distance apart within the plastic casing. Together, the elements form the sensing slot and create the controllable beam. At its narrowest, the slot is 4.8mm wide at the gap, and 5.7mm at the emission and reception points.

The raw dimensions of the EE-SX1340 itself are Standard SμPC packaging type, measuring 29.9 x 9.6 x 12.7 mm. It provides easy installation, optimal packing density and flexible wiring for automation. Both the emission and reception elements of the device are encased in the same package, reducing the overall peripherals that are necessary for installation.

Working Principle

The transmitted light from the emission element is received by the wide, inside surface of the receiving element, which couples directly with an IC amplifier. This in turn sets off the output transistor. The slot of the EE-SX1340 is designed in a specific way, so that when the object or material passes through the slot, it interrupts the light transmission, thereby affecting the output.

When the object or material undetects the gap of the slot, the EE-SX1340 provides a high-level output signal. As the object or material passes through or breaks the gap, the output signal switches to low level. As the output transistor is normally open type, the control signal system is positive logic, meaning the conduction of the output transistor required to detect the passage is closed or turned off when the signal is high.

Criteria for Selection

When it comes to selecting an EE-SX1340 sensor, several criteria should be taken into account:

  • Light Resistance: EE-SX1340 features a light resistant design, even in environments with a lot of ambient light.
  • Size of the Sensor: The large size of the EE-SX1340 allows up to four objects to be detected at once.
  • Detection Range: The Device has a long detection range of up to 11.4mm.
  • Compatibility: The EE-SX1340 is compatible with high-speed transfer lines.
  • Durability: The EE-SX1340 is designed to withstand long-term usage and maintain its dependability.

Conclusion

EE-SX1340 is an optical sensor, specifically a Photointerrupter, of the slot type, with a transistor output, and is designed mainly for object counting and object detection applications. It is a component of the wide array of Photointerrupters, offered by Omron. Although its size might be bigger than other optical sensors, its long detection range, light-resistant design, and increased durability are some of the features that make EE-SX1340 a great option for a sensor.
