Optical Sensors - Photointerrupters - Slot Type - Transistor Output

EE-SX974-C1 is a slot type optical photointerrupter with a transistor output, being widely used in industrial control and automotive applications. It consists of an infrared emitting diode and a NPN silicon phototransistor pair mounted in a plastic pouch device. The transistors are equipped with a pull-up resistor which is internally connected between the collector and the Vcc pin.

Application field

The EE-SX974-C1 is widely used in various applications, such as industrial automation systems, automotive systems, safety control, and other optical sensing applications that require a high response rate.

In industrial automation, EE-SX974-C1 can be used to detect the presence of an object, such as a workpiece, conveyor belt, or other component. Also, the product is well suited for precision operations such as sensing positions and determining presence in a reliable and repeatable manner.

In automotive system, EE-SX974-C1 can be used for controlling the electric brakes, ignition, and transmission. Moreover, by attaching the product to the outside surface of the car body, it is possible to detect the car’s speed, when the slot type photointerrupter is irradiated by LEDs or light-emitting diodes.

Furthermore, in safety control systems and other applications requiring reliable optical sensing solutions, EE-SX974-C1 provides an excellent solution. As it is highly sensitive to light, it can detect minute change in light transmission, making it applicable to a wide range of scenarios.

Working principle

The working principle of EE-SX974-C1 is based on the optical interruption technology. It is composed of an infrared emitting diode (IREDA) and an NPN silicon phototransistor (PTRA). The phototransistor has an internal base-emitter resistor which is connected to Vcc, thus providing a pull-up function when in lighted condition.

When there is no object in between the IREDA and PTRA, the phototransistor is switched to a non-conducting state, thus turning the output transistor off. On the other hand, when there is an object present between the IREDA and PTRA, the phototransistor is switched to a conducting state, thus turning the output transistor on.Since the output transistor is driven by the built-in pull-up resistor, it is not necessary to provide an external pull-up resistor for the application.
