The special construction technique allows for more than 1,000 times greater capacitance per unit volume than conventional aluminum electrolytic capacitors, with low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and low equivalent series inductance (ESL).The EEF-SX0E151ER can provide a wide range of capacitance values, up to 4,700uF, allowing designers to reduce the size of the SMPS. When used in an SMPS, the EEF-SX0E151ER also considerably lowers power losses due to its low ESR and ESL. This greatly increases the efficiency of the system and provides a superior capacitance-temperature stability.The EEF-SX0E151ER also features excellent endurance and high ripple current ratings, along with low cost and easy mounting. Its capability to replace tantalum and ceramic capacitors makes it the ideal choice for high-frequency SMPS applications, such as those found in cell phone chargers and laptop power supplies.The working principle of Aluminum - Polymer Capacitors, such as the EEF-SX0E151ER, is based on the electrical properties of aluminum. It has a dielectric layer made of aluminum foil with a special polymer electrolyte. This layer is sandwiched between two sheets of aluminum foil, forming a low-resistance electrical pathway between the two terminals.When current is applied to the capacitor, electrons are drawn through the first layer of aluminum and out through the second layer of aluminum. The electrons flow in a circle, creating a charge imbalance on either side of the electrolyte layer. This creates an electric field, which is what stores the energy.When the capacitor is operating at its rated voltage, the charge on either side of the electrolyte resists being changed. As the stored energy is used, the charge shifts to compensate, but it never reaches equilibrium or “0-volt state.” That is why, when current is removed, the capacitor retains some of its charge.Thanks to their superior performance and reliability, the EEF-SX0E151ER and other Aluminum - Polymer Capacitors have become an increasingly popular choice for high-frequency SMPS applications.
