Common Mode Chokes

Common Mode Chokes are designed to block the flow of alternating currents (AC) or pulses while allow the direct current (DC) to pass through. One of the most popular common mode chokes is the ELF-20N040A, a product designed mainly for automotive applications.

ELF-20N040A, with an inductance value ranging from 5.12mH to 9.20 mH, is highly efficient to suppress conducted noises due to electromagnetic radiation. This product can be easily integrated into various automotive applications requiring strong noise suppression, such as: audio systems, power supply systems, audio subsystems, and ECU (Engine Control Unit).

By nature, most common mode chokes share the same working principle. The flow of an AC or pulse through the coil causes a magnetic field to be created, which blocks the flow of the current. This is possible due to the fact that AC circuits rely on the exchange of energy between fields and charges, while DC circuits contain field forces that remain constant in the cables. Therefore, when ELF-20N040A is placed in a DC circuit, the magnetic field will not affect the current, and the block of current is not created.

ELF-20N040A is able to allow for the DC to pass while blocking AC or pulsed current due to its structure. Its design includes a ferrite core wrapped a wound around a copper sheet whose surface is made of thin copper wires, or single-stranded conductors. Because ELF-20N040A’s copper sheet carries an alternating current, the lines on the sheet created by the copper wires create a cross-shaped magnetic field. This magnetic field is then capable of blocking the flow of high-frequency wave, while the DC current is able to flow through.

Due to the fact that ELF-20N040A’s core is made of ferrite, a highly efficient core material, it can suppress higher conducted noises more effectively than other common mode chokes. Ferrite is a sintered ceramic material made of oxide and one or more magnetic metals, such as iron or nickel. It has the ability to create a strong, stable magnetic field that is capable of blocking low frequency or RF noise, making it suitable for automotive applications where RF noise is usually present.

ELF-20N040A’s performance is ensured thanks to the characteristics of its core material. The product’s core is able to withstand up temperatures up to 120°C and its low loss permits a high voltage-to-current ratio, allowing the antennas to pick up signals even at long distances. Furthermore, it is able to sustain high power levels due to its high dielectric strength. Thanks to its versatility and efficiency, ELF-20N040A is suitable for a wide range of applications, from automotive to audio and power.
