EMC2305-1-AP-TR Application Field and Working Principle

EMC2305-1-AP-TR belongs to PMIC - Motor Drivers, Controllers. It is a highly integrated triple full-bridge PWM motor driver providing the highest level of flexibility and performance. The device is engineered to provide extremely low noise and EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) compliant switching.

The EMC2305-1-AP-TR is designed to drive 3-phase brushless DC motors providing up to 3A peak output current for each phase with a wide input voltage range from 7 to 45V, and integrated current sensing option for speed and position control applications. Additionally, the EMC2305-1-AP-TR contains various integrated and protected features such as over temperature protection, low voltage protection, over voltage protection, and over current protection.

The application field of the device mainly includes motor drives for the following usage: Robot, Vacuum Cleaner, Printer, Game Console, Electric Drill, Coffee Maker, Electric Fan, Lawn Mower and Robotic Lawn Mower, etc. The device is ideal for applications as it allows system designers to use fewer components and reduce printed circuit board (PCB) area, cost and development time.

The working principle of EMC2305-1-AP-TR is based on Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technology. PWM control is used to adjust the speed, power and/or torque of the motor. PWM control involves varying the electric current of the motor and thereby controlling the phase angle of the spinning motor. PWM has several advantages over traditional analog control systems, including increased flexibility, improved performance, and an easier design process.

PWM is implemented by comparing a fixed frequency sawtooth waveform with a variable modulated digital waveform. When they are compared, the duty cycle of the modulated digital waveform determines the power being applied to the motor. The EMC2305-1-AP-TR chip has dedicated hardware blocks such as PWM regulator, shunt regulator, and SenseFET drivers. It also contains various internal registers, registers for configuring various system parameters, and comparators for overflow and underflow conditions.

The PWM regulator produces a triangular wave. Then, the comparator compares the triangular wave to the modulated digital waveform from the host. Depending on the results, the driver gates are opened or closed to allow electricity to pass through to the motor. The shunt regulator then adjusts the output voltage level to a predetermined level ensuring that the motor receives only the fixed amount of voltage required.

The EMC2305-1-AP-TR provides a wide variety of features, which enables it to easily be used in different applications. It has a high speed PWM frequency (up to 25 kHz) with programmable step resolution, making it ideal for applications with tight speed regulation requirements. Additionally, the device has 8-bit resolution, current sensing options (up to 22A), automatic commutation control and embedded protections. Therefore, it can provide reliable, efficient and low noise motor control.
