Electro-mechanical reed switches (ERMs) are versatile components used in a wide variety of electrical and electronic applications ranging from traditional home and industrial automation to more modern LED lighting systems. ERMs are used to detect either a change in magnetic field or electrical current and respond by changing the state of their contacts. This basic mechanism makes them ideal for sensing the presence of objects such as magnets or the opening of a door. The most common type of ERM is the 1-17MM, which is the smallest and the most popular due to its high sensitivity, low power consumption and wide operating temperatures range.
