TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors) and Varistors (Voltage Dependent Resistor) are two most commonly used devices to provide protection from transient voltage surges and electrical noise. Television Equipment Supplies ERZ-E05A221 is a type of Varistor, also known as a Voltage Dependent Resistor (VDR). It is a non-linear device used to protect equipment against transient overvoltage conditions. ERZ-E05A221 is especially suited for military and industrial applications, due to its performance in the high-voltage range.

Working Principle
The ERZ-E05A221 uses a metal oxide (MOV) element combined with a ceramic layer for surge suppression. The metal oxide element functions as a resistor to restrict current flow and the ceramic layer helps to absorb it. When the voltage across the element surpasses its threshold (clamping) voltage, the device becomes conductive and a surge of current is limited thus protecting against destruction.
The working principle of MOV varistors can be simplified to three steps. Firstly, the current flows through both the ceramic layers which protect the device from the high voltage of a surge. The second step is when the voltage rating of the surge is exceeded; then the MOV element allows the current to flow through it. Finally, the voltage drops down to below the triggered voltage.
The ERZ-E05A221 TVS has low capacitance and can effectively limit the voltage on the circuit. This helps to protect sensitive circuits against electrical transients and noise, resulting in improved system reliability.
