The ERZ-E05E241 series of Varistors, also called Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV), is a specialized voltage dependent resistor designed to suppress high voltage surge in AC and DC power systems. It is a two-terminal, non-polarized device typically built from ZnO and other conductive materials.As an overvoltage protection component, the ERZ-E05E241 Varistor provides continuous operating voltage of 420V and a maximum peak impulse current of 50KA (8/20 µs). It offers superior surge protection for RFI/EMI filters in control, motion and automation equipment.Operating PrincipleThe ERZ-E05E241 is based on Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) technology. The device is structured from an array of zinc oxide semiconductor discs separated from each other by thin layers of insulating material. These discs are restricted to move between pairs of parallel electrodes, forming a varistor element.The varistor element holds a minimum, or “valley” voltage (Vvalley) until the applied voltage reaches the “peak” voltage (Vpeak). When Vpeak is reached, the varistor element begins to conduct electricity. This is because the distance between the zinc oxide discs narrows, reducing the electrical resistance and allowing electricity to flow through the device.At Vpeak the Varistor has a specified resistance, and then as the voltage continues to increase the resistance of the device starts to decrease. This helps to prevent excessive electricity from entering the system, helping to protect equipment from electrical damage.Application FieldThe ERZ-E05E241 is suitable for a variety of AC & DC power systems, as well as for a broad range of Industrial Equipment Protection applications.It is an ideal overvoltage protection device for AC/DC power systems, providing reliable protection from diverse high voltage overshoots and surges such as induced lightning, switching transients, and short-term overvoltage.The ERZ-E05E241 Varistor can also be used for RFI/EMI filter protection in a range of industrial motion and automation equipment.
