TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors), MOVs (Metal Oxide Varistors) and ERZ-E07A271 are components used to protect the electrical device from transient electrical disturbances. They are applied to protect the circuit from transients with large instantaneous energy, for example produced by lightning surges, inductive switching, and so on. ERZ-E07A271 is an EPCOS TransilTM Varistor, with a wide operating voltage range of 5 up to 300 V. This device is particularly suitable as surge diverters for IEC 61643-1 complying industrial and information technology systems.

Working principle of ERZ-E07A271

The basic working principle of ERZ-E07A271 Varistor is to provide a fast response to a transient voltage surge. When the voltage reaches the breakdown voltage of the device, it suddenly breaks down and creates a low impedance path that can conduct current away from the protected device.

When the surge voltage across the varistor is below the breakdown level, it functions as an insulator, having a very high resistance, so current flows is almost zero. The resistance level is determined by the value of the resistance of the device, which is enhanced by the temperature and the applied voltage. It will take a relatively high voltage to switch on the device.

When the voltage reaches the breakdown level, then the resistance is reduced and the current starts flowing. This reduces the voltage to a level that can no longer damage the protected device. The time duration of the surge protection can be modulated and controlled, making the varistor very effective to a variety of conditions.

The varistor has a maximum sustained current rating that should not be exceed. It’s recommended to use an appropriate fuse in series, to make sure the varistor is not damaged due to excessive current.

The ERZ-E07A271 Varistor also has a nonlinear current-voltage (I-V) characteristic, making them quite effective for suppressing lightning surges and transients up to 250V.
