The ERZ-E07A561CS is a transient voltage suppressor (TVS) that combines the advantages of a metal oxide varistor (MOV) with added protection against repetitive strikes which is otherwise absent with MOVs. It operates by decreasing the voltage applied to a device that connected to it and clamping subsequent voltages that exceed its breakdown potential. In this way, it prevents transients that may otherwise cause the device to potentially malfunction or be damaged.

The ERZ-E07A561CS is a glass encapsulated MOV with a breakdown voltage of 561 volts. The device also offers surge current ratings of 2.90KA (10/1000µs) which makes it suitable for a variety of applications where there exists unavoidable transients such as lightning, power supply surges, and electrostatic discharge (ESD).

The transient voltages that exceeds the rated breakdown voltage are effectively suppressed due to the nonlinear conduction across its terminals once the breakdown voltage is reached. The stored energy of the varistor is consumed as it clamps the voltage to its conductive breakdown voltage. In this way, the connected device experiences some degree of protection from transient overvoltages. It\'s predecessor, the ERP-E07A7100CS, has a higher breakdown voltage (7100 volts) and better current-handling capability (10KA).

Despite the fact that the ERZ-E07A561CS offers a considerable level of overvoltage protection, it is important to understand the trade-off between its derivable current and surge current capabilities. The device has a very high surge current rating enabling it to absorb more current over its breakdown voltage, but this comes at the cost of generating more heat over the same period. This makes it important to properly size the MOV when considering which erp series model to use.

The device is suitable for a variety of applications where there exists a risk of overvoltage or ESD such as power supplies, instrumentation, and automotive. The overvoltage protection from the ERZ-E07A561CS helps to ensure the longevity and reliability of the connected device.
