Today, with improved performance and lower costs, the ERZ-E07E511 is quickly becoming the most popular form of transient voltage suppressor or “TVS” for protecting against voltage spikes, transients, and surges. Additionally, the device is also widely used in the automotive industry as a Metal Oxide Varistor or “MOV” to safely monitor, control, and minimize any type of accidental, sudden, or extreme increase in electrical energy.
The ERZ-E07E511 is a bi-directional device that uses non-linear characteristics of its PN junction to suppress voltages and absorb current when a surge occurs. The figure 1 below illustrates a basic circuit using an ERZ-E07E511 as its main component. As seen in the circuit, the device itself is connected between the power supply line and the load, with the load connected in parallel with the device.

Figure 1: A Basic Diagram of an ERZ-E07E511 Voltage Suppressor in a Circuit
When an electrical surge occurs, the device senses the sudden over voltage and rapidly changes its PN junction to a non-linear impedance. This results in a voltage clamp between the information and power line, limiting the maximum voltage that can be reached by the power supply. The connecting line to the power line is usually designed to be a low inductance path to provide a fast reaction to the instantaneous voltage spike.
When a standard voltage transient occurs, the package’s trigger voltage kicks in and the SCR (silicon controlled rectifier) is initially triggered in a high current state. The device then dissipates the transient energy and the SCR is turned off. Once triggered, the ERZ-E07E511 is designed to self-restore to its original state while recovering from the voltage surge.
The device also uses a ceramic body encased in either a radial, axial, or surface mounted package. This allows the device to provide better thermal management and long-term reliability than many other types of commercial grade TVS devices. Additionally, the device is capable of handling much higher energies and withstands higher temperature environments.
Overall, the main function of the ERZ-E07E511 voltage suppressor is to monitor, control, and minimize any sudden increases in electrical energy, thus protecting valuable equipment and components from surges and transients. With its sophisticated trigger voltage, fast response time, and solid protection level, the device is becoming one of the most popular options for a wide variety of applications.
