ERZ-E11E221 application field and working principleTVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors) technology has been successful in protecting the sensitive electronic components from electrical transients. This protection is provided by limiting the overvoltage and providing an alternate conduction path for it to be dissipated safely. This type of overvoltage protection is provided by Varistors, MOVs and Gas discharge tubes. ERZ-E11E221 is an overvoltage protection device which falls under MOVs and thereby provides superior protection against transients for the sensitive components. This article covers the application field and working principle of ERZ-E11E221. The ERZ-E11E221 belongs to Varistors family and thus performs the same duty of preventing the damage to sensitive electronic components due to the overvoltage. It is a two-electrode overvoltage protection device which comes in the form of cylindrical shape and consists of zinc oxide pellets. These zinc oxide pellets contain reverse parallel connection of non-inductive resistors and semiconductors in order to protect the device from the current, which the electrostatic discharge or ESD produces on the lines. This MOV works for both AC and DC. In AC circuits, it limits the overvoltage or surge by dissipating the sudden voltage spike in the form of heat. This limits the voltage across the device and thereby protects other devices from damages. In DC circuits, the device acts as the clamping circuit to protect the circuit from the surge or ESD. The device will clamp the voltage as soon as it reaches the trigger voltage level thus limiting the Current flow. One of the main advantages of using ERZ-E11E221 is that, it provides the same protection over a wide range of operating voltages, and it is capable of protection up to 1000V. Another main advantage of this device is that, it has an excellent thermal shock resistance which is important when subjected to thermal shock during operation in the application. This in turn increases the operational lifetime of the device.
