The ERZ-E11F221 is a varistor – short for Voltage Dependent Resistor – made by Epcos. Specifically, this particular varistor is part of the ERZ series and is a metal-oxide varistor, or MOV. In addition to being a component of the Epcos ERZ series, this particular varistor is a disk-type varistor with a center-hole. It is designed to be used in applications like Electronic Control Devices, Load Switching, Lighting Control, Agricultural Automation, Automotive components, Industial HVAC and building control systems.

Varistors play an important role in electrical circuits and, in fact, are used to protect electric circuits from unwanted transients and overvoltages. As such, varistors are connected across a component that needs to be protected, such as a load, in parallel and in opposite polarity to it. When the circuit detects an overvoltage, the varistor is triggered into operation, in which it creates an open circuit. This open circuit serves to protect the component it was connected to. MOVs meet the highest safety and performance requirements, making them a sought-after component for many industries.

The ERZ-E11F221 varistor boasts 11kV surge voltage with an AC/DC rating of 275V AC/300V DC, 26J energy absorption at peak current of 20kA (8/20µs), and min-max capacity range of 4A-11A (Tg=85°C). In addition, this varistor enjoys a 7.1mm disk diameter, 14.7mm height, and the center-hole is 10.2mm. It weighs a mere 8 grams. It also has an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and excellent load capacity thanks to its non-linear, voltage-dependent type characteristics.

The working principle for varistors is quite straightforward and, in fact, quite ingenious. Essentially, the voltage is applied across the varistor when a circuit is closed. When this is done, electrons in the semiconductor material become excited and form electron-hole pairs, allowing current to flow. The current that flows through thevaristor is electrical energy that is converted into heat energy, which is then dissipated into the air. The electron-hole pairs that form are very unstable and are quickly annihilated, releasing energy to the circuit in the form of heat.

When the varistor is subjected to an overvoltage, it acts to reduce the current to a safe level, which prevents the component it’s connected to from burning out. This is done by the electron-hole pairs clustering together to form an electrical bridge that dissipates energy. As the voltage continues to rise, the resistance of the electrical bridge rises in order to keep the current within safe limits. When the voltage falls below a certain level, the electron-hole pairs break apart, causing the electrical bridge to dissipate.
