High voltage transient protection devices (TVS, Varistors and MOVs) are important components in electronic systems to protect against overvoltage conditions (transients) and improve system performance, reliability, and longevity. The ERZ-E14A621 is a high voltage transient protection device specifically designed for protecting communication links against electrical surge.The ERZ-E14A621 is usually used in communication systems for its high surge capability, such as in telecom, CATV, DSL, and other communication systems. It is also suitable for data signalling applications, such as digital data display, computer peripherals, solid state relays, and digital audio/visual equipment. This high voltage transient protector is rated for a clamping voltage of 20V and for surge current with amplitudes up to 18A (8x20μs).The ERZ-E14A621 consists of a zinc oxide (ZnO) varistor element connected in series with a low-loss positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistor. The ZnO element of the device responds to the transient overvoltage and quickly clamps the surge voltage to the designed level, minimizing the amount of energy that is allowed to enter the protected circuit. The PTC thermistor is then activated by the current flowing through it. When the current reaches its rated value, the PTC thermistor will reset endurance current.The ERZ-E14A621 also has excellent transient acceptance and low trip time attributes. The device features a high energy capability and low capacitance. These characteristics make it ideal for protecting against high-voltage transient events such as lightning and electrostatic discharge. It also features a low operating temperature, so that it can be used in temperature-sensitive environments.In terms of operation, the ERZ-E14A621 is typically connected between two lines: the input line and the output line (see Figure 1). The input line is protected by the ZnO varistor element, while the output line is protected by the PTC thermistor. When a high voltage transient event occurs, the ZnO element responds, quickly clamping the surge voltage to a safe level. The PTC thermistor will then reset endurance current.The ERZ-E14A621 is a compact and robust device that is ideal for a range of communication applications. It offers superior transient voltage protection with a low-temperature operating range, preventing equipment failure caused by overvoltage events. It is suitable for telecom, CATV, DSL, and other communication systems, as well as for data signalling applications, such as digital data display, computer peripherals, and solid state relays.
