Varistors, also known as voltage-dependent resistors (VDRs), are two-terminal solid-state devices commonly used to protect electronic circuits from transient overvoltages. The ERZ-U23JP162F series is a type of varistor that can be used for the protection of applications in a variety of industries, such as automotive, industrial control, communications, and consumer electronics. It combines a robust casing with an additional thermal protection feature with a unique encapsulated construction designed specifically for outdoor applications. The ERZ-U23JP162F uses metal-oxide varistor technology (MOV) to provide its protection capabilities. MOVs are composed of sintered granular material containing zinc oxide particles, which are electrically connected at the molecular level. When supplied with a DC voltage, the zinc oxide particles form a nonlinear resistance, effectively absorbing any rapid increases in the voltage above a preset threshold. When the voltage returns to its normal levels, the particles return to their non-conductive state and the device is able to provide protection from further transient events.
The ERZ-U23JP162F series features a wide operating voltage range that starts at 4V and can handle voltages up to 550V. Its high surge capability can handle up to 80000A, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. Its low leakage current and low clamping voltage ensure that it will not cause any damage to the connected components, even when subjected to long duration overvoltage events.
The ERZ-U23JP162F series has been designed with an additional thermal protection element to prevent it from damage in high temperature applications. In the event of prolonged high temperature exposure, the thermal protection element will activate and disconnect the device from the circuit, protecting the connected components from damage as a result of the increased power dissipation of the MOV.
This series of varistors is available in a variety of package sizes and lead configurations, allowing it to be used in a wide range of circuits.
