ERZ-V10D911 is an extremely fast responding, high-clamping voltage Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) device that can be used alone or in combination with a Varistor, Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV), or other similar over-voltage protection device. It is a cost-effective, space-saving, and robust device designed to protect low-voltage circuits from transient voltage spikes.

The ERZ-V10D911 consists of a ceramic insulator surrounding a film layer made of amorphous polymeric material. The polymeric film layer is insulated with two silver electrodes and two contact pads. The two silver electrodes are in contact with the polymeric film, which is designed to change its electrical characteristics when subjected to an external electric or thermal stress. When the film is exposed to a large voltage, the molecules in the film undergo a rearrangement that changes the resistivity of the film and creates a high current density through the film.

When the current through the film exceeds a predetermined value, the temperature of the polymeric film increases rapidly, creating a “thermal runaway” effect. Under the thermal runaway conditions, the resistance of the polymeric film increases rapidly, leading to an increase in the current-limiting and clamping characteristics of the device. Once the over-voltage event is terminated, the polymeric film cools and returns to its initial low resistance state.

The ERZ-V10D911 is used in a variety of applications to provide fast acting, fast response, over-voltage protection.
