ERZ-V14D390 Application Field and Working Principle
ERZ-V14D390 is a TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) Varistor, a protective component widely used in industrial and consumer electronics to provide transient surge protection. Its main purpose is to protect sensitive electronic equipment from harm caused by excess voltage, such as in PLC controllers, power supplies and other equipment.A Varistor, or MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor), is a voltage-dependent resistor specifically designed to clamp transient voltages. It is typically used as a surge protection device in order to protect sensitive electronic components from voltage surges. In essence, it functions as a voltage limiter, clamping and restricting the voltage above a certain level.The ERZ-V14D390 series of Varistors is capable of carrying 20kA of transient surge waveform current and features a high rated peak surge current of 608A. It measures in at 14mm in diameter and is available in both radial and axial leads. The varistor is UL and cUL listed, and features a quick response time of 10μsec (10 microseconds).The ERZ-V14D390 Varistor is a four-layer semiconductor component, consisting of a metal substrate, silicon germanium compound layer, zinc oxide layer, and soldering layer. It works by forming a built-in potential barrier and thereby preventing the flow of an excessive current, which would otherwise damage the components. The Varistor is able to clamp down the voltage to a level that is safe for the delicate components.When excess voltage is applied, the Varistor reduces the voltage. This is possible due to the breakdown characteristics of the zinc oxide layer. As the applied voltage exceeds the breakdown value, electrons move from the zinc oxide layer to the exposed silicon germanium layer, forming an electron-hole pair. This produces a conductive channel and can ultimately reduce the applied voltage to a safe level.The ERZ-V14D390 is an effective protection device used in many consumer and industrial electronic applications. Its series is widely utilized in AC/DC adapters, UPS systems, power supplies, PLC controls, and more.
