First, the ADF4108 integrated on the board separates the loop filter frequency range into 12 sections, each of which contains its own independent loop filter bandwidth and VCO tune voltage versus frequency curve. This allow the loop filter characteristics to be adjusted for optimal performance. The maximum loop bandwidth of the ADF4108 is 4KHz.

Second, an externally provided reference frequency is sent to the board. The ADF4108 low-phase-noise clock generator frequency is digitally programmable and provides the reference frequency. An external 10 MHz oscillator can also be used as a reference. Using the low-frequency crystal oscillator, the board then generates the loop filter clock frequency.

Finally, the synthesizer IC on EV-ADF4108EB2Z uses the phase difference between the reference signal and the internal VCO to generate a loop error signal. This loop error signal is then fed back to the PLL loop filter for further control of the VCO tuning voltage. Thus, the EV-ADF4108EB2Z board locks on to the phase error and the reference frequency to generate the output signal.
