EVB-EP5388QI is an evaluation board for EP5388QI QuickPWM™ Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) controller. The basic purpose of the board is to help designers understand its functional parameters under realistic operating conditions, and to aid in the development, debugging and tuning of EP5388QI QuickPWM controllers.

EVB-EP5388QI is an open-loop, PWM buck converter primarily used for DC/DC conversion. Its main application is to convert a source voltage to a lower DC voltage with a controlled amount of current flow. Its primary reason for use is to provide clean, regulated DC output voltage to a device, process, or system. The EVB-EP5388QI board is equipped to convert 325Vdc input to 3.3VDC through PWM pulses.

The EP5388QI QuickPWM PWM controller can provide high efficiency and accurate regulation over a wide load range. It is capable of operating at a switching frequency as high as 1 MHz and the duty cycle range of the output PWM is 9.5% to 100%. The QuickPWM’s input power range is between 1V to 45V, and can be used as a standalone PWM controller, or a built-in high-speed amplifier alternative.

EVB-EP5388QI is designed to work in quasi-resonant mode for applications requiring designer optimized power conversion performance with high efficiency. It features a wide range of operating characteristics such as programmable start-up timing and frequency compensation, and its adjustable parameters allow a user to adjust the operation of the board to suit their application needs. Other features of the board include an overvoltage and overcurrent protection, peak current mode control, and efficient digital power saving mode.

The board consists of various components to monitor and adjust the performance of the power supply, such as an LCD display for monitoring Voltages & Currents, a slide potentiometer for adjusting PWM switching frequency, a DIP Switch for adjusting the PWM duty cycle, thermal reset with LED indicators and SOIC-8/TSSOP-8 for different ICs. It also includes various connectors and test points for making necessary connection and measuring output parameters. The board is powered by an external 9V dc input power supply.

The working principle of the QuickPWM is based on a general-purpose pulse-width modulation signal. Its switching frequency varies with a changing dimming/brightness setting. The pulse-width modulation works by turning on and off the voltage supply in regular and repeated intervals based upon the input signal. By changing the width of each pulse, the controller can adjust the output voltage, current, or power to meet the desired application needs.

To ensure the quality and reliability of the board, all components are checked in a burn-in test environment. The board has passed the stability test and the quality assurance test, and has obtained UL60601-1/IEC60950-1 certifications.
