FLD-50, also known as Limitron fast-acting fuses, is a type of self-contained fuses designed and manufactured by the Littelfuse company for use in general-purpose circuits and applications where high short-circuit current ratings are required. The FLD-50 is capable of withstanding interrupting and breaking currents up to fifty kilo-amperes (50,000 amperes).[1]

FLD-50 fuses are available in two different forms: class B (RK-5) and class CC (RK-6). The class B FLD-50 fuses have an interrupting capacity of fifty kilo-amperes, while the class CC FLD-50 fuses have a lower interrupting rating of forty-one kilo-amperes.

The body of an FLD-50 fuse is made of a high impact-resistant plastic and has a porcelain base. The fuse is hermetically sealed with a silicone sealant to ensure a low temperature operating environment, thus extending the life of the fuse. The seal also provides excellent environmental protection against dust, moisture, and shock.

The FLD-50 fuse operates on the simple principle of melting the metal element by the heat generated by an overload condition or a short circuit current. The metal element of the fuse has been designed to melt at a predetermined temperature and is capable of interrupting the overload or short circuit current, thus protecting the circuit from excessive current.

The FLD-50 fuse is provided with two terminals, which are connected to the ends of the metal element. When an overload current passes through the metal element, it begins to build up heat, increasing the temperature of the element until it reaches its melting point. At this point, the heated element melts and breaks the circuit, thereby protecting the circuit from any further damage from the overload.

The FLD-50 fuse is rated for a voltage of 600 volts, and is suitable for use in circuits with motorized appliances and equipment. The fuse is UL 4248-Listed and rated for use in applications anywhere from 30 to 50 kiloamperes. The FLD-50 fuse is designed to provide a low temperature operating environment and has a reset time of 1/60th of a second.

The FLD-50 fuse is able to quickly react to both overloads and short circuits by providing quick interruption of current and protecting the connected equipment. The FLD-50 also provides excellent protection against dust, moisture, and shock, making it suitable for use in hostile environments. Additionally, the fuse is designed to melt at a predetermined temperature, allowing it to safely handle higher short-circuit currents than ordinary fuses. The fuse can be used in a variety of applications, including industrial and motor control, transformers, medical equipment, and more.

In conclusion, the FLD-50 is a fast-acting, self-contained fuse design by the Littelfuse company, suitable for use in general-purpose circuits and applications where high short-circuit current ratings are required. The fuse body is made of a high impact-resistant plastic and has a porcelain base for maximum environmental protection. The fuse is designed to quickly react to both overloads and short circuits and is UL4248-Listed and rated for use in applications anywhere from 30 to 50 kiloamperes. With its simple and effective design, the FLD-50 fuse is a reliable and dependable solution for protecting electrical circuits from excessive current.
