The range of power line filter modules, like the FTA-100-104 series, have a number of practical applications in areas such as medical, industrial, security and audio equipment. These modules are designed to reduce unwanted electromagnetic interference (EMI) on power supplies, which is a common cause of malfunctioning in electrical devices. Basically, power line filters are a type of electromagnetic interference (EMI) traps that are used to trap EMI on AC power lines. The most effective ones use high-pass and low-pass filters to attenuate EMI frequencies.
Although modern power line filters can be very effective in reducing EMI on power lines, they have their limitations. Most notably, most filters cannot filter out frequencies that are lower than the cutoff frequency they are designed for. This means that if there is a higher-frequency disturbance on the power line, it will not be filtered out. Additionally, if the EMI from the power line is large enough, it may still manage to slip through the filters. In these cases, additional shielding or other methods must be used to further reduce the effects of EMI.
The FTA-100-104 series of filter modules was designed for applications where superior isolation performance is required. This series of filters is specifically designed to reduce common mode currents, which are a major source of EMI. The filters also provide good protection against overvoltage, undervoltage, and surges on the power supply. Additionally, the filter has been designed to meet UL Class H fire ratings, and is capable of operating in temperatures ranging between minus 55 and plus 175 degrees Celsius.
The working principle of these power line filter modules is fairly straightforward. The filter is usually composed of two sections: a low-pass filter section and a high-pass filter section. The higher and lower frequency components of the EMI are separated in each section by placing a choke coil or inductor in both the high-pass and low-pass filter sections. The choke coil blocks the higher frequency components that are harmful to the equipment, while the inductor blocks the lower frequency components that are usually harmless. The filtered signal then passes to the load, thereby eliminating EMI from the power supply.
In addition to providing excellent attenuation of common mode currents, the FTA-100-104 series also provides protection against other power surges. The module offers protection against surges more than 50 times greater than the AC input voltage, providing enhanced protection of the circuit. It also provides overcurrent protection, which is useful when unexpected inputs are applied to the system. Additionally, the filter offers overvoltage protection, which can help protect the system in the event of an unexpected voltage increase.
The FTA-100-104 series of power line filter modules is an excellent choice for applications which require superior isolation performance. These modules provide excellent protection against EMI, overvoltage, and undervoltage, offering an enhanced level of protection. Additionally, the high-pass and low-pass filters separate lower and higher frequency components, ensuring only the desired signals are passed to the load. This makes them ideal for use in a wide range of applications where EMI filtering is essential.
